Greater Works

based on John 14:12 Aramaic Bible

Noah did a great work

       Moses too

Abraham was father to Issac

did not have to make a sacrifice of him

                  became the father of faith

Jonah finished his task

         after much travail and prayer

from the belly of a fish and was still

                               mad at GOD

Jesus did great works

some we will never know of

Peter and Paul led the blind to see

            and Jesus said

Timeless truth, I tell you: ‘whoever believes in Me,

those works which I have done, he will also do,

and he will do greater works than these, because

I am going to the presence of my Father.’

Mustard Field

While driving on a country road in England I saw a mustard field. It was just the right time when all the plants were in bloom, a patch of vibrant color on the landscape. I had to stop, take a photo, ponder the source of mustard, like Jesus sitting in the countryside, saw its brilliance and told a parable about the man who planted a mustard seed in his own field. It was a simple truth, one the people could relate to. It was a healing plant, an ancient mustard recipe. He used it to demonstrate the kingdom.

Pliny the Elder wrote of it. It can grow wild but when cultivated it is much improved. Once it is sown it is hard to get rid of it. The tiniest of seed yet Jesus said it will grow into a tree that shelters the birds.

Fire

Led into the desert by the Spirit

Forty days

It was the Word that brought Him out

On fire for the Kingdom

And able to speak

Against the Pharisees of His day

He knew who He was

And ran knowingly

Into the burning man

Finding Kindness

I am on an inner search for kindness in my life.  How I was rescued from my own dispair or sought to help another.  Not wanting to confuse kindness with congeniality or cultural differences I felt a lifting of the heart when I thought of You.

The day You sent a message to the children of Israel that You would come again.  The prophets wrote Your words that we should all repent.  Hard to see the kindness in rebuke or recompense yet Your hope is there.

Let the soul find GOD

Hidden in small daily chores

I fall to my knees

The Battle

I went downtown to help a friend get a collared clergy shirt.  He spoke a little English even though his first language is French.  He had come from Rome for a Holy Convocation.  I was overwhelmed by the number of icons, so many little plastic Jesuses and Him still hanging on the cross.  “Iconoclast……….the battle is real.”  I doubt that he knew what I said.  I started to weep wondering what Jesus would have thought of the things I was seeing in the shop.  Would He have taken a whip out?

I felt like Paul in Ephesus when he rebuked the god Artemis and the idol makers set the people against him.  I told my friend I felt like Paul in Ephesus but I doubt that he understood what I was saying. I hardly knew myself.  I walked around the shop while my friend tried on the clergy shirt.  What I was seeing was big business all over the world.  On the shelf was a single crown of thorns and I questioned if this is what Jesus died for.

More than a savior

Jesus wants to be your LORD

And His will be done
