On a Thousand Hills

from Psalm 50

God said

every animal of the forest is mine

the cattle on a thousand hills

I know every bird in the mountains

insects in the fields are mine

While walking

Jesus looked beyond men

sheep and cattle

Martyrs

Jesus

had a powerful ministry explaining the kingdom of God

predicted His own death and resurrection did’t preach it

trained his disciples and commanded them

Go ye therefore and teach the gospel of the kingdom

to all the world

Trade connected worlds apart

Did Thomas really set sail or did he take an overland route?

Was he killed by the soldiers or Brahmin priests

or a wayward peacock arrow?

Paul’s letters from prison taught more of the kingdom

and how to deal with the church

before Nero took off his head

Peter’s request to Nero “crucify me upside down”
Matthew stabbed
Andrew crucified
Philip cruelly put to death
James stoned and clubbed to death
Simon refused to worship another god which always led to death
Jude (or Thaddeus) martyred
Another James was he killed too?
Bartholomew had various accounts of how he met his death
We all know Judas killed himself
John the most beloved died of his old age

Greater Works

based on John 14:12 Aramaic Bible

Noah did a great work

       Moses too

Abraham was father to Issac

did not have to make a sacrifice of him

                  became the father of faith

Jonah finished his task

         after much travail and prayer

from the belly of a fish and was still

                               mad at GOD

Jesus did great works

some we will never know of

Peter and Paul led the blind to see

            and Jesus said

Timeless truth, I tell you: ‘whoever believes in Me,

those works which I have done, he will also do,

and he will do greater works than these, because

I am going to the presence of my Father.’

Mustard Field

While driving on a country road in England I saw a mustard field. It was just the right time when all the plants were in bloom, a patch of vibrant color on the landscape. I had to stop, take a photo, ponder the source of mustard, like Jesus sitting in the countryside, saw its brilliance and told a parable about the man who planted a mustard seed in his own field. It was a simple truth, one the people could relate to. It was a healing plant, an ancient mustard recipe. He used it to demonstrate the kingdom.

Pliny the Elder wrote of it. It can grow wild but when cultivated it is much improved. Once it is sown it is hard to get rid of it. The tiniest of seed yet Jesus said it will grow into a tree that shelters the birds.

Fire

Led into the desert by the Spirit

Forty days

It was the Word that brought Him out

On fire for the Kingdom

And able to speak

Against the Pharisees of His day

He knew who He was

And ran knowingly

Into the burning sand

Finding Kindness

I am on an inner search for kindness in my life.  How I was rescued from my own dispair or sought to help another.  Not wanting to confuse kindness with congeniality or cultural differences I felt a lifting of the heart when I thought of You.

The day You sent a message to the children of Israel that You would come again.  The prophets wrote Your words that we should all repent.  Hard to see the kindness in rebuke or recompense yet Your hope is there.

Let the soul find GOD

Hidden in small daily chores

I fall to my knees
