On a Thousand Hills

from Psalm 50

God said

every animal of the forest is mine

the cattle on a thousand hills

I know every bird in the mountains

insects in the fields are mine

While walking

Jesus looked beyond men

landscape freckled with many animals

sheep and cattle

Togetherness

It was the end of summer.  The family had spent a few weeks in Iowa where my mother was now in hospice because of cancer.  Both grandchildren spent time at her bedside and played with cousins, saw  aunts and uncles and enjoyed the rare occasion of the whole family being together.

My younger sister would be the nurse.  She had the training.  I was worthless and returned home so the children could start school.  In a few days I got the call.  I booked a ticket to leave the next day.  The children wanted to know why I was going again, since I had just been there.

When your mother dies, you go there.

Woman in the Moon

Last night I dreamt I was the moon and I was the woman in the moon. I was the woman on the moon after a successful voyage with my rocket-fueled mooncraft. The moon was both in me and around me. I had always been the moon. Blood moon ran through my veins. Wolf moon always started a howl. The moonlight was penetrating from my skin. I was aglow.

I set up cycles that few could understand so they made me a goddess. Being content with that, I never asked to be worshipped. I never asked for those sacrifices. All I ever wanted was for you to see my beauty, to witness how I would fade away and come back and pull on your oceans.

In all of my fullness you must beware. I am the source for lunatic. Do not look long on me.

Taking the Ferry from Friday Harbor

Taking the ferry from Friday Harbor

smooth the water with no whales today

from here nothing looks poor or in squalor

chains of islands into Fidalgo Bay

til we rest at the dock to end our stay

kelp glows with light on these waving sea weeds

a seagull picks up a crab as it feeds

it is time to depart this vessel now

leave behind frivolous desire and needs

return with new vision and a plan for how

How to clear the woods of branches and twigs

arrive next spring to burn them in fire pit

weather permitting we’ll see how life rigs

hopeful of future          accept what we get

there is so much work and no time to sit

thankful for still being able to move

thankful there is totally none to prove

enjoy indépendance of off the grid

no power creates a new kind of groove

complex arrangements are better left hid
