Sonnet for Game of Thrones

Off they went to battle with death

better organized than their foe

hardly time to pursue a breath

the horn did three times blow

Picture them now on the battlefield

dragon glass spikes and burning moat

fire rains down on corpses held

under spell a straight spear will unbolt

Heroes will live and some will fall

I hope your favorite is not done

we know it can’t be the end of all

there are more episodes following this one

Game of Thrones season finale is here

Sonnet for Modern Day Current Event

Jan 19, 2019 at Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

Black Hebrew Israelites on the mall

speak loud in zealous religious tenor

hear the old testament not throw it away

raise their voice louder on a winter day

Covington High School students respond

while standing on the steps of Lincoln Hall

break the tension with a school sports cheer

with a smile a shout or was it a sneer

Indigenous elder beats on his drum

approaches the youth with his movement song

God the Creator will answer my call

media or a troll will send it to all

And in that moment was on display

freedom to assemble speak out and pray

dVerse prompt to write a sonnet

Sonnet for Modern Day Current Event

Water

the earth rises up dusty full of grime
no rain fell for seven fortnights and a day
where once was lush green now it festers brown
plants begin to shrivel and root hairs start to fade

without a sprinkle of water these plants will die
haul out the many hoses front back and side
choose to shower stream cone flat or jet propel
let the faux rain begin to douse them everyday

see the flower lift their heads
leaves turn plump and green
tender stems move upward once again

send more moisture says soil soaked again
plants say another day of sunshine we can’t stand
now keep us growing with your mercy and your rain
