November

November pulls the daylight shorter

crisp long shadows

a cool moon

hallways of justice écho

will there be unfaithful electors

in this month of political aspiration

migrating birds begin their journey

when there is snow on the ground

they will come to the feeder

Today the hawk came

perched on the fence

I do not want to witness

hawk swooping

to squirrel or bird

or my small dog

the hawk

ready

with talons

and hunger

Travelling to North Rim

5FFB8DD5-E130-4FB5-95FA-1D008B563D9E

Travelling with the storm perched over the canyon we head to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon both going there the storm moving faster along the rim while we drive over the plateau happy to be dry in these moments arriving at the campground everything is wet but the storm has passed the sky clears revealing the colors of layers of chiseled rock lit by the setting sun

Two years later I travel that same road there is no storm but snow is on the ground where the Cat Fire burned last summer we watched it burning from deep in the canyon hotshot fire fighters called in helicopters fly in and out delivering their load plumes of smoke rise over the Kaibab Forest we float safe on the water of the Colorado River and smell the air from 8,200 feet above now the snow covered ground hides the char of the Cat Fire black surrounds the base of these ponderosa pines others are burned completely pinyon junipers pine needles scrub brush 4500 acres burnt from a lightning strike

Travelling to North Rim

Moonlight Path

There was a time I walked away from a disagreeable circumstance. I walked into a cold night, dressed for winter with boots on, leather jacket, long hair covered with a hat.

Not sure of the way home, I only knew that north would take me to the main road and then west would take me home. I walked miles under an unnamed moon.

I remember the crisp air, blue of the snow, ice crunching under my boots and how the light fell against the snowbound trees. I felt lost while finding my way home.

Blue freeze of winter

Beauty penetrates the night

Leads a path to home

Moonlight Path

Florida Freeze

Today it is cold in Florida

there is ice on the wires

frost on pine and palmetto

mittens are sold out at Walmart

everybody has something to say

about the weather

waiting for a change of tide

a new moon or south winds

today that north northwest

brings down a chill

threatens snow in Florida

Winter on the Gulf Coast

isn’t always tropical breezes

blowing in from Belize

expect a hard freeze tonight

the northwesterly delivers

a harsh blow of minus below

picked up in Iowa

swept across plains

and plantations of Alabama

and Georgia

onto the fronds of palms in Florida

Accept the unexpected

everyone trying to stay warm

and make a buck

cover everything up

don’t let your pipes freeze

as the temp goes 25 degrees

cold sunshine of Florida

be ready to lose heat

prepare for more sleet

is climate change real?

it’s 20 degrees in Florida!

a real Florida freeze
