I am being sniffed

My dog wakes

paws over me

I am being sniffed

remnants

of sleep and dreams

I am being sniffed

from what lingers

of last night’s dinner

I am being sniffed

of garden smells

still in my hair

I am being sniffed

to say

wake up

time to go outside

I am being sniffed

My Dog at the Church Picnic

I am one of those people

who take their dog anywhere they can

especially to an outdoor venue—

Easter Sunday to a church picnic

on a beautiful sunny day

and all is well

until the pastor’s dog

meets my dog

and all hell breaks loose

(cuz my dog doesn’t like other dogs)

and my dog looks like the biggest sinner

snarling at the cute little white puff ball

the pastor’s dog so calm and composed

my dog lunging on his leash

head low to the ground

more snarls and lunges

sudden forward thrust of his body

paws extended outward to attack

serene picnic eating interrupted

all eyes on the snarly sinner

when I pull him back

tell him what a bad dog he was

no treat or reward for this behavior

then I forgive him his sin

Love to My Dog

How do I love thee!? Let me count the ways. from Elizabeth Barrett Browning

How do I love thee? I love thee unequivocally. Let no man deny true friendship with a dog. How do I love thee? With undeniable comradery. I seek no other desire but to walk with you everyday as you pull on the leash and sniff so boldly. How do I love thee? With double blessings to have you in my life against all odds of never having another pet. Your nickname Never Again. How do I love thee? With every passion welled up inside of me as you sit so earnestly for a treat. How do I love thee? Robustly and vigorously while scratching you behind the ears as you greet me at the door. How do I love thee? Undeniably.

Love to My Dog

And This Dog Barked

My dog Rufus was an aging beagle

sat in his kennel as people walked by

and this dog barked to see such a sight

My dog Rufus would sleep in my bed

cuddle in the covers where he laid his head

and this dog barked in the middle of the night

My dog Rufus was leary of strangers

always on guard if he would sense danger

and this dog barked before the bite
