I want to stuff myself before I fast
fatten the calf before the sacrifice
take pleasure in what will soon be forbidden
when the rations come I will be ready
prepare myself from wanting it all to have nothing

I wonder who changed it from Shrove Tuesday to Fat Tuesday. You’ve described the tradition well.

Your last line shows the paradox that exists in our striving and really shows how absurd it all is. Like, maybe we’re missing the point, just a bit, by preparing to want to have nothing, after fattening the calf and devouring it. Temperance is not a virtue to Westerners. It’s high risk, all or nothing– which will overwhelmingly amount to nothing, spiritually speaking.
