When I was a freshman in college, Allen Ginsberg came to campus and did a poetry reading. From the front and center I could see and hear him clearly. I was unaware of his poems and his freedom of expression challenge. Remembering where I sat in the auditorium, how he looked and moved his voice. Now all I can recall is his verse line about masturbating with an empty toilet paper roll.
Wrapped in sexuality
to say or not say
is it privilege and a choice

Allen was such a provocative personality. The “howling” gay beat poet. Yes, sexuality is truly a privilege and a personal choice… :-). I wrote a long form poem about the beat writers, about bohemia bring consumed by the tie-dye generstion. The beats meet the hippies. I included Ginsberg, Kerouac, Burroughs, Kesey, Cassidy and others. That was a pivotal period in modern literature. And you got to see Allen, and his unruly beard in person – very cool girl… 😉

I didn’t know what I was witnessing at the time. Years later in Seattle I got to go to Ferlinghetti’s poetry reading.

I think that it’s a certain privilege to exercise this choice as well. It’s so cool that you got to attend his reading. A thoughtful write! Thanks for participating. 🙂
