set the pail down
make sure to wear a shoe
or a boot may be better
with running start
the distance makes no difference
if you miss just keep on going
or stand beside the bucket
look down to see it empty
simply tip it
_____________
dVerse prompt quadrillé using kick – one origin of “kick the bucket” is the Catholic use of holy water at the feet of a corpse – the corpse would stretch its legs and tip the bucket
I am particularly struck by this:
“look down to see it empty” — especially if the metaphor of “kick the bucket” extends out.
Wonderful.

Also had never heard the explanation of the idiom itself. Thank you! 🙂

Never heard this Catholic explanation of Kick the Bucket. Familiar with fonts of holy water as you enter the church…this is a new one for me. As I always say, I’m always learning at dVerse! 🙂

I had not heard that tradition… but to see the bucket empty would be one experience…

I like the sense of futility in this poem and especially in that last line. Nice!
