We search among stones
plain on the outside
mute colors
occasional glimmer
reflects Iowa sunlight
dig deep to the bottom
of a quarry dreg
pound hard with rock hammer
split open to reveal inside
hope of crystals
jasper géodes
trilobites from an ancient sea

I love this search for sparkling hope at center. A beautiful metaphor, also.

Although I have never hunted for fossils or geodes, I can imagine the hope those who do have when they split a rock open.

I was with an eight year old and the first big rock (about ten inch) he split open had lots of small crystals inside. Oh joy!
