Learning to Swim

Mother taught me to swim

in the cloudy waters of Storm Lake

holding my breath as I submerged

my eyes opened

She standing

waist deep in the underwater

would push me head first

under and through her spread legs

then turn and catch me

on the other side

In the greenish brown water

supported by the sandy bottom

I could see her girlish figure

as I struggled between legs

and held on to my breath

Later in a nearby swimming pool

she would have me jump in

towards her

teaching me to swim

by moving further and further away

and not afraid to try

the whole distance
